Australia to Settle More Immigrants Outside Major Cities

Australia is increasing the number of visas in favor of skilled workers who are enthusiastic in migrating to the regional areas for easing the existing pressure on foremost cities, where the population is growing at a rapid pace. The government has a plan of increasing the intake in the regional migration program from 23,000 to 25,000 as per the statement issued by PM. Earlier  the government had reduced the annual intake in immigration to 160,000 on July 1, as against 190,000 earlier.

Furthermore, as per the data of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, one third of resident population in Australia was born overseas. Additionally, government census data of 2016 in Australia shows that it is a highly urban country and its population growth rate is highest in the OECD. Its two-third population lives in the capital cities of states/territories.

Between 2017 and 2018 there were large number of people who lived in these cities when compared to the people living outside these cities, based on the government data. In the Capital cities the growth was 79%  in the total population growth.

 The government plans to use migration programs to develop regions and also take the population pressure away from the major cities. By support to strong regions there is emphasis on creating a strong economy in the country.


Finally there will be access and priority processing for Migrants that agree to live in places outside Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Moreover the global university graduates living in these places will earn eligibility to seek more time on the post-study work visa.
