2.2 Million Immigrants Avail Temporary Migrant Visas in Australia

There is a call for examining a temporary visa regime urgently subsequent to the analysis revealing that there is an increase in the number of migrants on these visas to 2.2 million from 1.8 million during the last four years. The Australian Population Research Institute reported that 20% of the store packers, cleaners, and workers in the food and hospitality sectors availed this temporary migrant visa.

The Scenario is not Ideal

The increased over-dependence on temporary visas for the labor jobs was a concern because there are two million Australians remaining either unemployed or underemployed.

The government has to check the present issuing of temporary visas for identifying the degree of their misuse and overuse. The first national priority is providing employment opportunities to the local workers.

Michaelia Cash, the Employment Minister stated that the government has a commitment that the Australians get a priority in jobs. Overseas workers are recruited only to fulfill genuine shortages.

The authors of the report, David McCloskey and Bob Birrell, issued a warning that the jobs and growth strategy of the Coalition will lead  Australia to the pathway of low-productivity. Moreover, there is an abundance of labor supply, and the employers are not compelled to raise wages nor do they require any investing in labor-saving equipment.

There is a Need for a Rethink

Additionally, the temporary skill shortage visa was introduced by the government in March 2018 and it requires a rigorous testing in the labor market and the assessment requirements in the market, salary are comparatively stricter than the 457 visas which it had replaced.

Furthermore, the labor market testing requires that the employers have to advertise the position in Australia to make sure that Australians get the first priority. Employers can seek foreign workers when they show that the local workers are not available. Also, an expert in education and training stated that Australia had the aim of being a high-skilled, knowledge-based economy. In this scenario, many low or semi-skilled roles lost the attraction to be career options. The reason for the growth in Net Overseas Migration is the arrival of international students.
